While new regulations obligate or recommend people to wear medical masks at public places to prevent further spread of the Covid-19 virus, there are still open questions as to what face coverage does to social emotional communication. Previous research on the effects of wearing veils or face-covering niqabs showed that covering of the mouth led to the attribution of negative emotions and to the perception of less intense positive emotions. The current study compares a sample from the Netherlands with a (...) sample from the United Arab Emirates on their perception of emotions from faces covered by a niqab, censoring black bars, or uncovered faces. The results show that covering the mouth area leads to greater anxiety in participants in both countries. Furthermore, although participants did not report greater decoding difficulties for faces that were covered as compared to fully visible, results show that face coverage did influence emotion perception. Specifically, happiness and anger were perceived as being less intense. Further, face coverage by a niqab, as compared to black bars, yielded lower emotional intensity ratings. We conclude that face coverage in particular can modulate the perception of emotions, but that affective contextual cues may play a role as well. (shrink)

Each decade since 1979, the Healthy People initiative establishes the national prevention agenda and provides the foundation for disease prevention and health promotion policies and programs. Law and policy have been included in Healthy People objectives from the start, but not integrated into the overall initiative as well as possible to potentially leverage change to meet Healthy People targets and goals. This article provides background on the Healthy People initiative and its use among various stakeholder groups, describes the work of (...) a project aiming to better integrate law and policy into this initiative, and discusses the development of Healthy People 2030 — the next iteration of health goals for the nation. Lessons from the preliminary stages of developing Healthy People by the HHS Secretary's Advisory Committee on National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Objectives for 2030 and a Federal Interagency Workgroup will be included. Efforts by the Committee focused on the role of law and policy as determinants of health and valuable resources around health equity are also shared. Finally, the article discusses ways that law and policy can potentially be tools to help meet Healthy People targets and to attain national health goals. (shrink)

We bear witness to a sweeping social movement for change—fostered and driven by a powerful group of Black nurses and nursing students determined to call out and dismantle anti‐Black racism and discrimination within the profession of nursing. The Black Nurses Task Force, launched by the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO) in July 2020, is building momentum for long‐standing change in the profession by critically examining the racist and discriminatory history of nursing, listening to and learning from the lived experiences (...) of the Black nursing community, and shaping concrete, actionable steps to confront anti‐Black racism and discrimination in academic settings, workplaces, and nursing organizations. The Black Nurses Task Force and the RNAO are standing up and speaking out in acknowledgment of the magnitude of anti‐Black racism and discrimination that exist in our profession, health system, justice system, and economic system. This social movement is demonstrating, in actions, how individuals and a collective act as change agents to drive meaningful and widespread change for our present and future Black nurses. Levels of organization and their use in science have received increased philosophical attention of late, including challenges to the well-foundedness or widespread usefulness of levels concepts. One kind of response to these challenges has been to advocate a more precise and specific levels concept that is coherent and useful. Another kind of response has been to argue that the levels concept should be taken as a heuristic, to embrace its ambiguity and the possibility of exceptions as acceptable consequences of its (...) usefulness. In this chapter, I suggest that each of these strategies faces its own attendant downsides, and that pursuit of both strategies (by different thinkers) compounds the difficulties. That both kinds of approaches are advocated is, I think, illustrative of the problems plaguing the concept of levels of organization. I end by suggesting that the invocation of levels may mislead scientific and philosophical investigations more than it informs them, so our use of the levels concept should be updated accordingly. This study examines the cross‐cultural generality of Hering's (1878/1964) color‐opponent theory of color appearance. English‐speaking and Somali‐speaking observers performed variants of two paradigms classically used to study color‐opponency. First, both groups identified similar red, green, blue, and yellow unique hues. Second, 25 English‐speaking and 34 Somali‐speaking observers decomposed the colors present in 135 Munsell color samples into their component Hering elemental sensations—red,green,blue, yellow, white, and black—or else responded “no term.” Both groups responded no term for many samples, notably purples. Somali (...) terms for yellow were often used to name colors all around the color circle, including colors that are bluish according to Hering's theory. Four Somali Grue speakers named both green and blue elicitation samples by their term for green. However, that term did not name the union of all samples called blue or green by English speakers. A similar pattern was found among three Somali Achromatic speakers, who called the blue elicitation sample black or white. Thus, color decomposition by these Somali‐speaking observers suggests a lexically influenced re‐dimensionalization of color appearance space, rather than a simple reduction of the one proposed by Hering. Even some Somali Green‐Blue speakers, whose data were otherwise similar to English, showed similar trends in yellow and blue usage. World Color Survey data mirror these results. These within‐ and cross‐cultural violations of Hering's theory do not challenge the long‐standing view that universal sensory processes mediate color appearance. However, they do demonstrate an important contribution of language in the human understanding of color. (shrink)

Scientific theories have changed over time. Throughout the history of science, existing theories have regularly been rejected in favor of completely different ones. This chapter considers the challenge this fact poses to scientific realism, the view that scientific theories tell us about what the world is really like. Scientific theories seem to give us deep knowledge of the world around and within us, but there are reasons to doubt whether we can ultimately know that claims involving the theoretical posits at (...) their core are true. Nonetheless, challenges to scientific realism shouldn’t lead us to question whether we have scientific knowledge at all. There is a puzzle about how best to make sense of science’s role in knowledge and understanding, but this is not reason to question whether science is a trustworthy source of knowledge. (shrink)

Adolescence is a crucial time for social development, especially for helping and compassionate behaviors; yet brain networks involved in adolescent prosociality and compassion currently remain underexplored. Here, we sought to evaluate a recently proposed domain-general developmental network model of prosocial cognition by relating adolescent functional and structural brain networks with prosocial and compassionate disposition. We acquired resting state fMRI and diffusion MRI from 95 adolescents along with self-report questionnaires assessing prosociality and compassion. We then applied the Network-Based Statistic to inductively (...) investigate whether there is a significant subnetwork related to prosociality and compassion while controlling for age and sex. Based on the Do-GooD model, we expected that this subnetwork would involve connectivity to the ventromedial prefrontal cortex from three domain-general networks, the default mode network, the salience network, and the control network, as well as from the DMN to the mirror neuron systems. NBS revealed a significant functional subnetwork related to prosociality and compassion connecting 31 regions, showing DMN and DLPFC connectivity to the VMPFC; DMN connectivity to mirror neuron systems; and connectivity between the DMN and cerebellum. These findings largely support and extend the Do-GooD model of prosocial cognition in adolescents by further illuminating network-based relationships that have the potential to advance our understanding of brain mechanisms of prosociality. In his recent article “Attributability, Answerability, and Accountability: Toward a Wider Theory of Moral Responsibility,” David Shoemaker argues that our actual moral practices embody three distinct conceptions of responsibility and that some recent accounts of moral responsibility that draw their inspiration from the work of T. M. Scanlon fail to capture these distinct conceptions. My aim in this essay is to argue that our moral practices do not, in fact, embody three different conceptions of moral responsibility and that what Shoemaker (...) aptly calls “responsibility as answerability” is indeed the only kind of moral responsibility there is. This chapter's aim is to critically evaluate two recent accounts of the nature of moral blame, defended by George Sher and T. M. Scanlon, and to offer an alternative account that this chapter thinks solves some of the difficulties faced by their views. The chapter argues that both of these accounts leave out something that is absolutely essential to moral blame: the element of moral protest. To morally blame another, the chapter argues, is to register in some significant way one’s (...) moral protest of that agent’s treatment of oneself or others. This element, in turn, is what explains how moral blame differs from the sorts of negative attitudes and responses we might have toward individuals and creatures whom we do not regard as morally responsible for their conduct. Ethical decision-making frameworks assist in identifying the issues at stake in a particular setting and thinking through, in a methodical manner, the ethical issues that require consideration as well as the values that need to be considered and promoted. Decisions made about the use, sharing, and re-use of big data are complex and laden with values. This paper sets out an Ethics Framework for Big Data in Health and Research developed by a working group convened by the Science, Health and (...) Policy-relevant Ethics in Singapore Initiative. It presents the aim and rationale for this framework supported by the underlying ethical concerns that relate to all health and research contexts. It also describes a set of substantive and procedural values that can be weighed up in addressing these concerns, and a step-by-step process for identifying, considering, and resolving the ethical issues arising from big data uses in health and research. This Framework is subsequently applied in the papers published in this Special Issue. These papers each address one of six domains where big data is currently employed: openness in big data and data repositories, precision medicine and big data, real-world data to generate evidence about healthcare interventions, AI-assisted decision-making in healthcare, public-private partnerships in healthcare and research, and cross-sectoral big data. This chapter explores an emotional experience many philosophers regard as puzzling: namely, the feeling of guilt we sometimes have about attitudes that are never expressed or acted upon in any way. Though many philosophers assume such feelings must be irrational, it is argued that sometimes they may in fact be a justified response to the violation of an attitudinal obligation we have to others. The argument has three stages. The first stage explores several reasons why one might object to the (...) claim that we have attitudinal obligations to others, and argues that these reasons are not compelling. The second stage considers and rejects two proposals about how to rationalize our guilty feelings over unexpressed attitudes. The final stage shows that a contractualist moral theory, of the sort T.M. Scanlon defends, has the resources to make sense of the guilt we sometimes feel over unexpressed attitudes. (shrink)

Para responder a esta pregunta, desde una perspectiva filosófica, examino el sentido las palabras que Eichmann utilizó en Jerusalén para hablar (...) acerca de sí mismo. Con este examen busco mostrar, en primer lugar, que esas palabras expresan una forma de aislamiento cuya consecuencia es perder de vista el sentido de lo que se hace y, en segundo lugar, que esta pérdida de sentido es consistente con las condiciones de inconmensurabilidad evidentes en el juicio en Jerusalén. Dieser Beitrag zeigt, warum Exponate keine Dinge von diffuser Bedeutung, sondern (vorgefundene) Zeugnisse sind, die Aussagen über Sachverhalte (meist der Vergangenheit) belegen und anschaulich machen. Dinge im Museum sollen aber immer auch ästhetisch erlebt werden. Das macht sie besonders und zu Vexierfiguren, die uns (...) verblüffen. Exponate erkennend als Zeugnis oder ästhetisch zu betrachten, richtet sich nach klar und eindeutig zu trennenden Kriterien. Beides hat nichts miteinander zu tun. Dennoch ist es nur unsere Aufmerksamkeit, die sich auf bestimmte Aspekte eines Objekts richtet, ohne dass die anderen verschwinden. So bleibt die eine Art zu sehen in der anderen im Hintergrund präsent und kann unsere Wahrnehmung beeinflussen. (shrink)

Drawing on a landscape analysis of existing data-sharing initiatives, in-depth interviews with expert stakeholders, and public deliberations with community advisory panels across the U.S., we describe features of the evolving medical information commons. We identify participant-centricity and trustworthiness as the most important features of an MIC and discuss the implications for those seeking to create a sustainable, useful, and widely available collection of linked resources for research and other purposes.

Human social interaction is varied, complex and always changing. How we perceive each other and ourselves, how individuals interact within groups, and how groups are structured--all these are the domain of social psychology. Les preuves de l’immortalité de l’âme, qui sont un des thèmes cen­traux de l’enseignement de Platon, ont fait l’objet d’une réflexion d’ordre logique et formel sur la manière dont elles sont (ou devraient être) exprimées. En particulier l’argument en faveur de l’immortalité de l’âme contenu dans le Phèdre (245c5-246a2), fondé sur la notion d’âme automotrice et principe de mouve­ment, a été assidûment analysé, pour ce qui est de sa formulation, par plusieurs représentants de la tradition platonicienne (Alcinoos, Hermias d’Alexandrie), ainsi (...) qu’à l’intérieur de la tradition péripatéticienne (Alexandre d’Aphrodise). Par conséquent, il représente, à l’avis de l’auteur, un point privilégié d’observation de la façon dont les platoniciens s’approprient la logique aristotélicienne et récri­vent, à partir de l’époque impériale, certains arguments platoniciens. En outre, il apparaît qu’Alexandre d’Aphrodise, bien qu’étant de tradition péripatéticienne, a grandement contribué à la reformulation des arguments de Platon selon les canons de la logique aristotélicienne par les platoniciens contemporains et posté­rieurs. Il semble aussi qu’Hermias, dans ses scholies sur le Phèdre, réagit juste­ment à certaines affirmations d’Alexandre. Dans cet article, on montre quels sont les points de contact ainsi que les différences dans la réécriture analytico-syllogistique de l’argument du Phèdre en faveur de l’immortalité de l’âme par Alcinoos et Hermias, sans négliger l’apport d’Alexandre. In genetic medicine, a patient's diagnosis can mean their family members are also at risk, raising a question about how consent and confidentiality should function in clinical genetics. This question is particularly pressing when it is unclear whether a patient has shared information. Conventionally, healthcare professionals view confidentiality at an individual level and ‘disclosure without consent’ as the exception, not the rule. The relational joint account model, by contrast, conceptualises genetic information as confidential at the familial level and encourages professionals (...) to take disclosure as the default position. In this study, we interviewed 33 patients about consent and confidentiality and analysed data thematically. Our first theme showed that although participants thought of certain aspects of genetic conditions—for example, the way they affect day-to-day health—as somewhat personal, they perceived genetic information—for example, the mutation in isolation—as familial. Most thought these elements were separable and thought family members had a right to know the latter, identifying a broad range of harms that would justify disclosure. Our second theme illustrated that participants nonetheless had some concerns about what, if any, implications there would be of professionals treating such information as familial and they emphasised the importance of being informed about the way their information would be shared. Based on these results, we recommend that professionals take disclosure as the default position, but make clear that they will treat genetic information as familial during initial consultations and address any concerns therein. In his paper “The Difficulty of Tolerance,” T. M. Scanlon argues that tolerance is sometimes a morally ideal attitude to hold toward other citizens in society with whom one disagrees. My aim in this paper is to critically evaluate this claim, by looking more carefully at the nature of tolerant attitudes and the conditions under which they are, and are not, appropriately directed toward other citizens. I argue that there is a moral tension present even in allegedly “pure” cases of (...) tolerance that Scanlon’s account overlooks. I go on to argue that what Scanlon has in fact given us is a compelling defense of tolerance as a virtue of character, rather than an attitude, and that the _virtue_ of tolerance only rarely calls upon us to take up _attitudes_ of tolerance toward our fellow citizens. I conclude by reflecting on one situation in which a person with the virtue of tolerance may legitimately adopt an attitude of tolerance toward a fellow citizen. (shrink)

Bereits früh beschäftigt sich Barthes mit der Tragödie und dem Tragischen; einer der ersten von ihm veröffentlichten Texte ist „Culture et tragédie“. Als junger Intellektueller weist er auf das hin, was er gegen Ende seines Lebens in Die helle Kammer. Bemerkung zur Photographie als Tragik der Existenz ausformulieren wird. Als Erfahrungsmodus ist das Tragische der Gattung der Tragödie zugeordnet, wird jedoch auch in anderen Rede- und Schreibweisen ausgetragen. Als Drama gibt die Tragödie dem Tragischen eine Form und damit dem Menschlichen (...) eine Dignität, ohne dass diesem dabei Heilung von Leiden in Aussicht gestellt würde. Von dieser Tragik ist das Schreiben selbst nicht ausgenommen und wird vor allem im Liebesdiskurs an seine Grenzen geführt. (shrink)

In der Moraltheorie ist der ethische Naturalismus umstritten. Seit der Zurückweisung eines metaethischen Naturalismus durch G.E. Moore galt es als ausgemacht, dass die Bedeutung von „gut“ nicht mit einem natürlichen Prädikat bestimmt werden kann. Trotz dieses Vorbehalts versuchen Aristotelikerinnen und Aristoteliker neuerlich wieder, Argumente des ethischen Naturalismus in die Erörterung der Moraltheorie einzuführen. In diesem Beitrag möchte ich dafür argumentieren, dass ein in der Aristotelischen Ethik angelegtes naturalistisches Argument zur Rechtfertigung einer Konzeption guten Lebens Berücksichtigung verdient. Dazu soll zunächst der (...) Nachweis geführt werden, dass mit Aristoteles eine Konzeption der Gattungsidentität des Menschen entwickelt werden kann, die in der Aristotelischen Naturphilosophie ihre Grundlage hat. Dann wird erläutert, inwiefern die Deutung guten menschlichen Lebens als eines moralisch richtig orientierten Lebens auf die Vorstellungen der Gattungsidentität bezogen bleibt. Entgegen der Deutungen des Naturalismus als einer biologisch-wertenden Konzeption und entgegen den Ansätzen zu einem Verzicht auf eine ethische Ausdeutung des menschlichen Gedeihens wird eine perfektionistische Deutung des naturalistischen Arguments entwickelt. In moral philosophy, ethical naturalism is no longer accepted. Since G.E. Moore succeeded in rejecting metaethical naturalism, no one tries any more to define “good” with “natural terms”. Yet, recently, Aristotelians have tried to reintroduce ethical naturalism in moral theory. In this contribution I shall argue that ethical naturalism can be defended as an approach that helps identify the “good human life”. I shall first explore the notion of “species” in Aristotle’s natural philosophy as a theoretical background for explaining the notion of the human species. I shall then identify an argument that connects the idea of the human species with ideas about the good human life in a moral sense. Different from interpretations of naturalistic arguments in terms of an evaluative notion of a biological entity and different from an interpretation that reduces the notion of “human flourishing” to a political notion, I shall defend a version of ethical naturalism that deserves the name “ethical perfectionism”. In der philosophischen Ethik ist "die gute Welt" außer Mode gekommen. Der vorliegende Diskussionsband setzt sich mit Ludwig Sieps "Konkreter Ethik" auseinander. Die "Konkrete Ethik" von Ludwig Siep öffnet sich bewusst hin auf eine Hermeneutik der religiösen und kulturellen Traditionen der Menschheit, sie sucht aber auch in der Auseinandersetzung mit Problemen der Kultur- und Naturethik den Dialog mit dem Forschungsstand der Naturwissenschaften. Methodisch geht die "Konkrete Ethik" von einem Verständnis von Ethik aus, das ihr Ziel nicht in der Ausarbeitung von (...) abstrakten Prinzipien sieht, die es dann nachträglich auf konkrete Probleme zu applizieren gälte. Aus dem hermeneutischen Selbstverständnis seines Ansatzes heraus ergibt sich eine beeindruckende Vielfalt von Fragestellungen. Sie reichen von der Frage nach der Bedeutung von Objektivität und Realität in der Ethik bis hin zu Problemen des reproduktiven Klonens und des Bevölkerungswachstums. Entsprechend vielfältige Ansatzpunkte ergeben sich für eine systematische philosophische Auseinandersetzung mit der "Konkreten Ethik". Im vorliegenden Band diskutieren namhafte Forscher Sieps Thesen, Konzepte, sein Begründungsmodell und seine Auseinandersetzung mit zentralen Themen der Medizin-, Bio- und angewandten Ethik. (shrink)

Die Wildtierethik beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, ob moralische Akteure empfindungsfähigen wildlebenden Tieren aus ethischer Sicht positive Pflichten in der Form von Rettungs-, Hilfs- und Unterstützungspflichten schulden, und falls ja, was diese Pflichten genau beinhalten. Haben wir die Verpflichtung, Wildtiere aus Naturkatastrophen wie Buschfeuern und aus den Fängen von Raubtieren zu retten? Sollen wir die Lebensqualität wilder Tiere beispielsweise durch Impfungen verbessern? Oder haben diese das Recht auf ein Leben frei jeglicher menschlicher Einmischung?In der Literatur finden sich verschiedene Vorschläge, was (...) man unter einem ›Wildtier‹ verstehen soll. Ortsorientierten Definitionen zufolge leben Wildtiere in von Menschen unberührten Gebieten. Nicht-domestizierte Tiere, welche sich in Städten wiederfinden, wie beispielsweise migrierende Vögel, Waschbären oder Füchse, fallen diesem Verständnis zufolge nicht in die Gruppe der Wildtiere. Dispositionelle Definitionen beziehen sich auf das Verhalten von Tieren. Wildtiere sind demzufolge Tiere, welche nicht gezähmt sind. Hunde und Hähne, welche vom Menschen gezielt mit unkontrollierbaren und aggressiven Charakterzügen gezüchtet wurden, zählen somit zu den Wildtieren. Konstitutiven Definitionen zufolge sind Wildtiere nicht-domestizierte Tiere, also Tiere, in deren Physiologie und Wesensart nicht durch Züchtung eingegriffen wurde und welche nicht vom Menschen abhängig sind. Acquiring Spastic Cerebral Palsy through no fault of one’s own directly challenges and contradicts this. We tend to base our judgments of other people on the way they “look” before we even speak to them or get to know them. For many centuries western society has valued and aspired to having (...) the “perfect” image and body shape. The children’s nursery rhyme “Humpty Dumpty” illustrates that as far back as the 1600’s when something was broken people felt there was a “need” to correct the damage and fix the problem. Maybe “Humpty Dumpty” was an obese person who fell off the wall, maybe he was an intoxicated soldier, maybe it was a name of a large cannon that was sitting on the wall of Colchester (Wright, 2008) which was set up to protect the city. No matter what the situation, the reader is left with a feeling that whenever there was something wrong with Humpty Dumpty, there was a need to correct the error and fix what was broken. Because he was “different” or “not normal” in one way or another he was not valued for his role by members of his local community. The reader is left to form his or her own opinion. Society continues to hold those views to this very day.I am a secondary emergency teacher, have completed a Masters in Special Needs along with having a permanent acquired physical disability, Spastic Cerebral Palsy, affecting my four limbs. This was caused after an initial medical examination was “botched” by an unsupervised intern—the specialist left the theatre during the procedure when I was 14 weeks of age, over forty years ago. Further medical testing was arranged because there was a belief that I may have had hydrocephalus—swelling and excess fluid buildup around my brain causing it to be unnecessarily enlarge for my age. In my family’s case this seems to be an hereditary trait that has passed from my father who has a large head. It’s interesting to note that an obstetrician made a comment to my sister on the size of her toddler’s head. [End Page 213]Since 1970 I have had a range of both positive and negative medical experiences. As a child who wasn’t able to comprehend what and why things were happening I was very frightened and often very upset. As an adult I am able to understand what and why something is going on and I ask questions when needed.“Normal” has always been completing the same things but in a different way to other people while intending to reach the same outcome of “success.” There are many ways to skin a cat and “normal” is a term that has a very broad definition which is dependent upon the individual and the situation at hand. What is “normal” for me will be “different” for someone else. What is “normal” for another person will be “different” for me. It’s the differences between individuals that we come to value later on in life. That I cope in a different manner from others has clearly been aided by being able to make use of information technology—laptop, mobile phones, printers, etc.—along with a feeling that the acquired physical disability that I have is a small part of the overall person that I am. Before I became a person with an acquired disability I was a normal, happy, healthy baby and even now although I will always have a disability I have excellent health and choose not to be defined by having acquired a disability. Unlike some other people I consider myself to be a person who “acquired” a disability instead of being a “disabled” person. Having an acquired physical disability is a small part of the person I am. The manner in which I acquired a severe physical disability is what I have come to value along with the fact that I have done well in many areas of life while having such a severe condition.Unlike people who had disabilities in the 19... Barthes ist an Formen des Zusammenlebens – Konvivenz – und des Dialogs zeit seines Lebens interessiert. Dazu gehören auch die Reisen in ferne Länder, deren fremdartige Sozialität ihn besonders während seiner Asienreisen nach Japan und nach China faszinierten. Den Erfahrungen radikaler Alterität, davon ist Barthes überzeugt, kann man nur mit Formen der Neutralität gerecht werden. Auch das Interview ist eine Redeform, die Barthes einerseits kritisiert, andererseits immer wieder thematisiert bzw. sich ihr in der Öffentlichkeit stellt.

Barthesʼ erste Buchveröffentlichungen stellen keine Fingerübungen eines jungen Autors dar, der erst in der Folge zu seinem ‚eigentlichen‘ Werk gefunden hat. Am Nullpunkt der Literatur, 1953 im Original unter dem Titel Le degré zéro de l’écriture im renommierten Pariser Verlag Seuil erschienen und Mythen des Alltags bzw. Mythologies, wie der Titel im Französischen heißt, stellen bereits ‚große Würfe‘ dar, und letzteres Buch ist zu einem Klassiker der Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaften avanciert. Am Nullpunkt der Literatur beinhaltet eine Auseinandersetzung mit Sartres kategorischer (...) Unterscheidung von Literatur der Poesie und Literatur der Prosa in Was ist Literatur?. Barthes widerspricht dem und situiert das Engagement der Schreibenden nicht mehr im lyrischen oder narrativen Inhalt, sondern in der Form eines Textes.
